Day 1 – Introduction to Oceans
Watch movie -
The Little Mermaid
Craft project -
We did little tissue paper fish
Geography – Globe work looking at the ocean. What is there
more of ocean or land? What is the difference of land vs. ocean. Made pie
charts to show the difference 70% water vs. 30% land. How much more ocean than
land? Made a bar graph found the difference.
Discuss water life cycle
Read: I’ll follow the Moon by Stephanie Lisa Tara
All
about Sea Turtles (scholastic)
Day 2 –
Craft project – More of the tissue paper fish
Start decorating our Ocean Science Journal
Start experiment 1 – Two containers of water, one fresh water,
one salt water (added salt to tap water). Will one evaporate faster than the
other? Will you be able to tell which one was fresh water and which was salt
water? How? Measure amount of water in each container, record findings in
science journal experiments section.
Start experiment 2 – Grow animals…Pick two of the four
“grow” sea creatures. Measure and discuss the two you chose. We picked the
Stingray and the Sea Turtle for the first set. Take day 1photo’s Fill 10g tank with 5 inches of water and
place both animals in the tank.
Fieldtrip to local Pet store to observe freshwater fish vs.
saltwater fish
Day 3 – (Saturday, so shortened day)
Experiment 1 – Measure amount of water in each container.
Record findings.
Experiment 2 – remove animals from tank, measure animals,
note changes in appearance, take day 2 photo’s. Replace in tank. Compare size
from Day 1. Increased? How much? Do you think they will increase even more? What
changes did you observe from day 1?
Experiment3 – Measure, record and add Starfish and Shark
grow animals to tank.
Experiment 4 – One container “fresh” water (four cups tap
water)one container of “salt water” (4 cups tap water + 2 tablespoons salt)place in freezer.
Day 4 – (Sunday )
Break
Day 5
Experiment 1 – Measure amount of water in each container.
Record findings
Experiment 2 – Remove from tank, measure, record, replace
Experiment 3 – Remove from tank, measure, record, replace
Experiment 4 - Remove from freezer, observe, record, discuss
Put together under the ocean diorama, discuss some of their
favorite fish, coral reefs, sharks, etc.
Day 6
Begin individual books Day 1– We did “Under the Sea in
ABC’s”- both girls got to choose different things from under the sea to
represent each letter. We tried to find the more “unusual” things to use. On
the first day it’s doing the title page, with graphics and the first 3 letters.
Discuss Oceans in historical terms – How did people in
Ancient Civilizations use the oceans? Did they really think the world was flat?
If so, When did that change? Did
“sea monsters” really exist?
Oceans in Art – view online, discuss different paintings, which ones do they like, not
like, why?,
Experiment 1 – Measure, record.
Experiment 2 – Remove, measure, record, replace
Experiment 3 – Remove, measure, record, replace
Day 7 -
Read - Hello Whale. Discuss different mammals in the ocean. mammals vs. fish. Read about Seahorses, discuss types of seahorses, look up pictures
Listen to the sound of the ocean's - whale sounds, waves, etc.
discuss pollution and it's impact in the ocean - debris in from people, Float or sink experiments, density of salt vs. fresh water.
Day 8 -
Fieldtrip to the coast.
Day 9 - Break
Day 10 - Experiments - remove, measure, record, replace
Day 11 - Break - Reading for fun, and Dutch Kings day
Day 12 -
